What Is Bistro Sauce?

Has someone just mentioned making up a batch of bistro sauce, but you have no idea what the heck bistro sauce is? Worry not, I have the answer and a recipe. And this is the Lazy Foodie after all so the recipe, as always, is quick and easy!

Bistro sauce is a really versatile sauce that goes with anything. The sauce has enough flavor to stand alone as a sandwich filler but also works really well as a dipping sauce. The sauce usually contains Mayo, Ketchup, Mustard, Worcestershire Sauce, Paprika, Garlic & Horseradish.

My Bistro Sauce Recipe

So you know what it is, and now you want to know how to make it. Don’t worry I’m not going to make you read 500 words on my family’s history with this sauce.

No one cares! Let’s get straight to the recipe.

Yield: 1 Medium Jar

Bistro Sauce

This is a great dipping or sandwich sauce and also works really well as a burger sauce.

Prep Time 1 minute
Cook Time 2 minutes
Total Time 2 minutes

  • 4 Tablespoons Mayo
  • 2 Tablespoons Ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons American Style Mustard
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons Horseradish Sauce
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Smoked Paprika
  • The Juice From Half A Squeezed Lemon
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl
  2. Decant into a jar and leave to settle for 30 mins to an hour before use
  3. Enjoy!

As you can see from the recipe this is a really simple sauce to make. If you have never tried it before then I will say that it is very similar to a traditional burger sauce. So if you like burger sauce then chances are you will like bistro sauce.

When it comes to making the sauce itself you can be flexible with the ingredients. I don’t really measure the mayo, I just dollop some in and get mixing. I didn’t call this website the lazy foodie for no good reason!

Adding more mayo will reduce the flavor and make a more plain-tasting sauce, this may be good for some people. So just mess around with adding more or less mayo until you find the ratio that is just right for you.

Feel free to mix and match a few ingredients to really fine-tune this sauce. I use American-style mustard but if you prefer a stronger flavor then try English or dijon mustard.

Don’t be afraid to stray from the recipe, a lot of people are too regimented and stick to exactly what the recipe says. I have found though that you learn a lot more about flavors and what works and what doesn’t when you stray a little off-piste.

Storing The Sauce

I like to store all of my homemade sauces in old jars and then pop them in the fridge. This one had sliced jalapenos in beforehand but is now full to the brim with bistro sauce.

What Does Bistro Sauce Taste Like?

As I mentioned a little earlier this sauce is very similar to a really good old-fashioned burger sauce. The horseradish and mustard combine to offer that pickle taste that burger sauce is famous for.
